My animal kingdom

24 08 2021

Six non-human creatures share our home, but family would argue there are seven. I am sure I have mentioned them from time to time, but today I’m rounding them up in a single post. By home I mean the property including house and garden.

The animals are Willy the neighborhood peacock, Snowball the cat from next door, the feral chickens, Big Fat Dove, the pigs who visit on the other side of the fence, and last but not least, JJ the family dog. Questionable is the Madagascar gecko.

Ah, life in the country. Take care of the animals, and be well.

The story of the peacock

20 05 2020

Willy

Aloha mai e studio fans ~

Today I publish for the first time “The Story of the Peacock.” I was given an assignment in my Hawaiian language class to write a story, or mo‘olelo, using action verbs in the past and present tense. I wrote it in English first. When I translate it I must follow a certain sentence pattern and avoid the verbs “to be” and “to have,” so it will not be word for word.

“The Story of the Peacock” isn’t very sophisticated, in my opinion, so I think it will make a good illustrated children’s story. Several years ago I designed bilingual books (Hawaiian/English) for an early education program. This might be a good addition to the library.

Today’s menagerie

These four creatures have names and depend on the people for food, so I guess they are ours: Massimo, JJ, The Fat Dove, and Willy the Peacock.

Welcome 2018

1 01 2018

Welcome 2018, studio fans. Wishing you peace, a lot of hope, and more love this new year.

View from the studio near the end of 2017. The waterfall started from the mega rainfall we had on the island.

In midtown Manhattan, a couple takes a selfie. Remember to LOVE.

For the birds

7 12 2013

Two peacocks appeared
in my garden this morning
looking for salad

On the right and left
I missed their iridescence
not their loud love calls

Five six seven eight
chickens mingle, look for worms
don’t dare touch cat’s food

Fat dove out-raced them
for the tasty little bits
of breakfast. Oh, birds!

Last night

31 03 2013

Moonlight sonata
wakes me at three forty-five
streams in my window

Silence of peacocks
differs from the night before’s
loud cacophony

In the cool stillness
I fall back into dreamland
until rooster crows.
