Joe Kaakua and a snippet of my high school reunion

Our Punahou School Class of 1967’s 50th reunion is now a pleasant memory shared with a gazillion photos and well wishes on Facebook. After many activities on both Hawaii and Oahu islands, including the annual Alumni Luau on campus that honors the 50th Year class especially, the finale was a picnic at our classmate’s family’s large rural estate.

Hats off to my buddy Joseph Kaakua who organized the event and his wife Joann (we call her Girly), his right hand. Joe requested my now-celebrated mountain apple pie for the picnic. “Maybe two,” he said. Well, you can’t say no to Joe.

But was he kidding? That’s not enough for 150-200.  So I made more than two!

Mountain apple (ʻōhiʻa ʻai in Hawaiian) pies. The fresh fruit tastes a bit like a pear. My pie resembles rhubarb.

Our most recent Punahou graduate

Lei and more lei for James. So many that he is about to present me with one of white ginger. His older sister Anna came from Minnesota.

Eleven thirty Saturday night. Just returned from Honolulu where my hanai nephew James David Yoshimura Sinclair was graduated with honors from Punahou School. I am so proud of him. It was a long commencement ceremony but very exciting for the grads. They will be partying until morning. The Blaisdell arena was filled to capacity. Our seats in the balcony gave me a bird’s eye view, too far for me to get good close-up photos. Here, instead, are images of James being greeted by his family afterwards.

Cover art

A group of classmates packed and fulfilled the early orders for our reunion book today. It was my honor to design the 164-page volume. God designed the cover shot of a Kaaawa sunrise. I just happened to be lucky enough to capture it with my iPhone!

Calico cat

Something totally different from me, studio fans. Yes, a cat! I created this piece with hand-dyed tissue paper and framed it just in time to offer it to the Punahou Carnival Art Gallery, open during Carnival hours 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on February 5 and 6. Half of the sales collected is donated by the artists to the school’s financial aid fund. I love this kitty!

My paintings at the Punahou Carnival

Good morning, art lovers! I am offering these three recent oil painting originals of mine to the Punahou Carnival for sale in the Art Gallery booth this weekend! Feb. 7 and 8.

The deal is 50-50. Half of the money is donated to the student financial aid program (that’s how my parents could afford to enroll me at Punahou) and half is paid to the artist.

Art is just one of the scores and scores of attractions at this annual Honolulu event. Good eats, music, rides, games, crafts, plants, white elephant, variety show, midway, and more.

The main walk-in entrance is at Punahou and Wilder streets. But here’s a great tip: Park your ride at Central Union Church (Punahou and Beretania) and walk.

Bring moola to spend. It’s for a good cause. Maybe I’ll see you there!

Kahuku 30, Punahou 24

Images from last night’s HHSAA Division I State Football Championship game at Aloha Stadium. I’m a Buff ‘n’ Blue alumna. I live in Red Raider country. Where to sit? What color to wear? Arrggg! 😕 What a great game! Hail to the champs!

Early in the big game. Unfortunately, No. 90 Punahou was injured in the first quarter.

Playing with color. My neighbors of Ko'olauloa are cheering in the red section. After Kahuku won, they honked their car horns, yelled and screamed past the studio, all the way to the North Shore. Kaaawa brought out the aerial fireworks.
