Farm Fair at Kualoa Ranch

The Hawaii State Farm Fair down the highway at Kualoa Ranch goes on for one more day on Sunday. We ran out of energy earlier than in previous years, but not before scouring the plant booth for herbs, and the produce booth for bananas, tomatoes, and a pineapple.

We stood in a long line for fresh lemonade in a quart size Mason jar. We made the rounds in the agriculture exhibit tent. And we admired the 4-H farm animals.

Our grandkids are off island this summer, so we skipped the kiddie rides and the ponies. Finally, we headed home before any appetite lured us to the plate lunch line; tacos seemed popular.

If you are on Oahu, you might consider taking in this rural experience.

At home for the long haul

Another dog picture, but hey, my dog seems to be the only constant during the current pandemic while we all stay at home. You are staying home, right?

Or at least assigning your trips “off campus” to the same one person per household. For our family that person is Pete.

He took advantage for a brief time of the order-and-pick-up service from Kualoa Ranch just five minutes down the road. Other times he went to Windward Mall in Kaneohe for the weekly farmers market.

The mangoes came from Ewa, the lady said. Yummy, and a good find because our tree isn’t bearing this year.

Coffee cake is topped with fresh mango slices and cinnamon sugar, then baked.

Small road trip

JJ the dog likes to go for rides

We took time out today for a short road trip down the highway to Kualoa Ranch to pick up the order of groceries we placed on Monday. It was a chance to take the dog for a ride.

To help the community during this period of staying home to guard against the coronavirus, the Ranch initiated this service. Kualoa Ranch, in addition to raising cattle, normally operates varied and numerous recreational and retail activities spread out across its properties for off-island visitors and residents alike. One example is the providing of Kaaawa Valley, that the Ranch owns, for movie locations.

Now it has consolidated its employees to operate a well organized food distribution program for the public.

How it works:

First ask to be put on an email list for Kualoa Grown. The product list is sent out on Monday for Friday pick up. Place your order online. To be added to Kualoa Grown email list please email Terra at tmcginnis@kualoa.com 🤙🏽

On Friday afternoon, drive to the Ranch where you are directed to a pop-up tent to pay. Happy people will place a numbered card on the windshield. Everyone wears protective masks.


Today we picked up orders for two families.

Follow the green traffic cones up the hill to where more happy people will deliver packages straight into your vehicle. Just roll down the window. No need to get out of your car at all.

Today we got apple bananas, beef chili, and fresh string beans. Last week we indulged in a dark chocolate bar, pricey but excellent and worth the money. Sometimes we need to treat ourselves. And go for a ride.

Hello studio fans!

Three events to alert you to, from closest to farthest to in-between:

I’m excited for all three, but this morning Eric Whitacre released his VC4 to everyone in the choir. I’m in it! What I want to know is, can you hear me? Can you see me? Let me know, okay? Here is the link, and as Eric says, “Please watch in HD and for the love of all that is holy TURN IT UP.” The VC4 officially premiers at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Coronation Festival in London before the Queen. It feels good to me for being a tiny part of this project of world music.

Closer to home is the delightful Hawaii State Farm Fair and 4-H Livestock Show down the road at Kualoa Ranch. Please click on the link for details if you want to go. Maybe I’ll see you there. When we told Miss Marvelous’s family about it, they said, “Aww…” They remembered what a good time they had (they’re in Italy now). Here are my photos from two years ago.

Thirdly, please save July 20 for the Prince Lot Hula Festival, a day-long program of wonderful Hawaiian dance, arts, crafts, and food at the beautiful Moanaloa Gardens. I will have a booth there with my oil paintings and some lower-priced reproductions of “Kamaipuupaa,” my image of the earthen mound that is the stage the hula dancers perform on. Moanalua Gardens is one of my favorite places to paint.

This is a good opportunity to see and purchase my work — originals, giclée, and art prints. DH and my friend Pi‘ikea will join me with custom-made ukulele and t-shirt designs. Images of the farm fair

Posting my favorite farm fair photos from the 2011 Hawaii State Fair and 4-H Livestock Show at Kualoa Ranch today. We all like the fair because we get to see the farm animals. And I think the windward Oahu ranch is a great place to stage it, don’t you?

Kualoa Ranch provided the venue for the weekend fair. Not bad, eh?

“Made in Hawaii” and “buy local” seemed to characterize the food choices in both the farmers market and the food booths, including Kualoa Ranch All Natural Grass-fed beef, Kahuku corn, and OnoPops.

Check out all the local Hawaiian flavors of this frozen treat. I had "surinam cherry clove." The list includes "mango lime habanero," "watermelon hibiscus," "pickled green mango" and "starfruit lemongrass."

I love Kahuku corn!

The out-of-town judge from Texas gives pointers to these 4-H'ers exhibiting their lambs. The champion is the one on the left and in the photo below.

"Slick" is the name of this champion market lamb, exhibited by Sydney Porter, 15, and bred by Paul and Vera Eguires.

Here's Sydney, again, exhibiting "Major," the champion market steer.

Besides eating the food and viewing the animals, there was a tent full of plants for sale.

Among the educational exhibits & demonstrations, I learned about aquaponics (e.g., raising tilapia and organic vegetables in one closed system)—something I’d like to invest in at the studio—from Olomana Gardens, and DH picked up some fresh garlic herb butter from Naked Cow Dairy.

For the small kiddies there were the ubiquitous inflatable bouncies, horseback rides, and a couple of carnival rides. Before we left, Miss Marvelous and her dad had to spend their tickets one one last ride.

So much fun on the whirly ride! Wheeee!

The farm fair continues tomorrow, Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission. I’m not sure if any large animals will be there tomorrow, as the auction takes place this evening. I hope the fair comes here again next year.

5K family fun run/walk in Kaaawa Valley

Kaaawa Valley with Puu Ohulehule beyond

This morning was perfect for the “1st Annual Kaaawa Elementary School Ocean Warrior 5K Family Fun Run/Walk” in Kaaawa Valley, a short ways down the road from the studio. The film industry uses this location for movies and TV shows. This is the beautiful place where Miss Marvelous’s parents wed.

Many thanks to the Kaaawa Elementary School PTO Committee and Kualoa Ranch for coordinating a successful community event. The entry fee bought access to the course trails, the event t-shirt, a bottle of water, and a coupon for 50% off of three different activities at Kualoa Ranch. Shave ice, spam musubi, cotton candy, music, and the great outdoors made for a great party!

We could have brought Alice Brown and Pua (guest dog), as plenty of other people brought their canines, and the event folks offered free poop bags, but, alas, we had left the pooches home. I brought my easel and took the opportunity to sketch out a new painting of the vista. Miss Marvelous was among the youngest entrants to show off her new walking skills. Congratulations, Kaaawa! Everyone had a good time!
