Honors for Ivalee Sinclair

22 02 2014

The Learning Disabilities Association of Hawaii honored my hanai mother Ivalee Sinclair tonight at a dinner at the Pacific Beach Hotel.

Mom was the founder of Hawaii’s advocate groups for learning disabled people and their families in Hawaii more than 40 years ago, obtaining Federal funding and legislation for support in subsequent years, and making sure services were consistent with the law.

Tonight she was honored for “her vision, her guts, and her drive for the organization,” working tirelessly for many years, and she was recognized as “a legend, historian, and feared advocate.”

The Learning Disabilities Association of Hawaii named a new library center of resources for parents after her. Ivalee’s family was there to help celebrate.

Pictured below are, from left, me, Julie (Mrs. Karl) Sinclair, Ivalee Sinclair, Cherie (Mrs. David) Sinclair, and Dawn Yoshimura (Mrs. Brian Sinclair).

Understanding Georgia O’Keeffe

Hey, studio fans! Tomorrow is my usual painting day with my group out in the landscape. Since being sidelined with a temporary medical issue in December that forced me to cancel many activities and plans, I haven’t painted a stroke. DH brought a pot of tulips for St. Valentine’s Day, and Tamsen softly suggested I paint a still life. Curiously, I have never seen a tulip blossom like the one I photographed above. So I’ve been thinking about picking up my brush. If not tomorrow, then soon. What do you think?

Good morning, art lovers! I am offering these three recent oil painting originals of mine to the Punahou Carnival for sale in the Art Gallery booth this weekend! Feb. 7 and 8.

The deal is 50-50. Half of the money is donated to the student financial aid program (that’s how my parents could afford to enroll me at Punahou) and half is paid to the artist.

Art is just one of the scores and scores of attractions at this annual Honolulu event. Good eats, music, rides, games, crafts, plants, white elephant, variety show, midway, and more.

The main walk-in entrance is at Punahou and Wilder streets. But here’s a great tip: Park your ride at Central Union Church (Punahou and Beretania) and walk.

Bring moola to spend. It’s for a good cause. Maybe I’ll see you there!
